The Child in Time (Julian Farino, 2017)

Children's book author Benedict Cumberbatch loses his 4-year-old daughter in a supermarket and spends year after year looking for her against all hope, his marriage quickly becoming a casualty of his obsession. The detail that every time he sees a girl in a yellow jacket, he can't help following her, of course echoes Roeg's Don't Look Now, but this is based on an Ian McEwan novel, and so, despite just touches of dream sequences, no gothic horror conclusion is to be expected. Instead, it's a universal story of coping with loss and guilt. The direction is somewhat scattergun in terms of structure, but the main and supporting cast is solid and there's also room to take some well-aimed shots at self-serving politicians on the side.

6/10
